Poetry: What kind of girl are you?

Anonymous

So he said to me, “What kind of girl are you?”
So I said back
What do you expect me to be?
Because I am not the kind that you can easily understand
I can come in different forms
Depending on who I am with
I don’t fit with the norms
Try to understand me and get lost in my labyrinth
The truth is
I don’t really know what kind of girl am I
Memories and stereotypes clouding my identity
And how society projects us
As a nonentity
Let me tell you everything about being a girl,
Expected to be gentle like the summer breeze
I am just not born gentle
Expected to be submissive
I prefer to lead
Expected to have a bubbly personality
It is hard to make me smile
Expected to be emotional
I make decisions with logic
Expected to be the secondary role
And never the first
Never the one who earns money and work in a lab
But the one who stays behind, taking care of children
Girls can be aggressive,
Girls can be ambitious
Girls are intelligent,
Girls are independent
Let me be me
Let girls be girls
